  • PCD

  • PCD is a synthetically produced, extremely tough, grown together mass of diamond particles with coincidental orientation in a metallic matrix. It is produced through sintering of chosen diamond particles under high pressure and high temperatures. Catalyst is graphite, the PDC – crystals grow together.

    PCD has a high thermal conductivity and a good heat dissipation from the cutting area. PCD possesses the highest bending strength of all cutting materials. PCD is very suitable for the machining of aluminum with high Si-percentage or other abrasive materials. Temperature hardness until about 650° C.

    Field of application similar as by CVD-D:
    Non ferrous metals as aluminum, plastics, CFK, GFK, graphite, titan, ceramics.

        • Fabrication:
          Boron nitride powder is the basis for manufacturing of cubical boron nitride which is available since the end of the 60’s. It is manufactured under extreme high pressure and temperatures of over 1500° Celsius.
          Cubic boron nitride is these days the second hardest material available next to the diamond.

          Properties:
          In many applications the cubic boron nitride is preferred to the diamond since it is thermally stable in the atmosphere until 1400° Celsius. Diamond begins to disintegrate already up from 800° Celsius, another property of PCBN compared to PKD is the chemical resistance against ferrous materials.

                • Bore diameters from 1mm can be bored using our PCD-CVD or CBN equipped carbide boring bars. A precisely coordinated intake system with internal cooling and boring bar with cutting surface complete the program. A 45° inclination on the shaft and a transverse pin in the intake fixture allows you to accurately set the tool for operation in just a few seconds.

                          • CVD-D (Chemical-Vapour-Deposition of Diamond)

                          • The ultrahard cutting material “CVD-thickfilm diamond” possesses the highest hardness and the highest wear resistance of all examined cutting materials.

                            “CVD-Thickfilm diamond” cannot be ground economically with the momentarily used grinding technology which is being used worldwide by tool manufacturers. The innovative and unique of the new laser technology is to machine this ultra hard cutting material for the industrial process economically. Through the precisely controlled laser abrasion “Laserfinish” cutting edges can be produced, with this new process any geometrical form and 3D –Micro chip breakers can be lasered into ultrahard cutting materials.

                            The mostly used “PCD cutting material” has in comparison to the “CVD-thickfilm diamond” clear drawbacks due to its soft metallic binder. In several tests it has been proven that especially the soft binder of the PCD is damaged through abrasive particles. The consequence is a break out of the diamond crystals due to a reduced anchorage in the cutting material matrix. The consequence of this is that by the machining of aluminum – and magnesium alloys and also non ferrous materials preferably diamond is used as cutting material. The clean diamond segments, which in most cases are brazed onto a carbide insert, with a rake angle of 0° do not enable the chips to be formed and broken for transport.

                            Fabrication of CVD-D thickfilm diamond
                            In a vacuum by temperatures of around 1200° Celsius hydrogen and methane form under the arc a prism. Out of this the carbon is extracted and isolated onto the substrate as diamond. (without adding any metallic catalyst)

                            On the surface of the supporting substrate the diamond crystals grow to an even polycrystalline layer with coincidental crystal orientation. The cut segments for tipping the tool tips are manufactured after debonding of this layer with a laser.

                            The mostly used “PCD cutting material” has in comparison to the “CVD-thickfilm diamond” clear drawbacks due to its soft metallic binder. In several tests it has been proven that especially the soft binder of the PCD is damaged through abrasive particles. The consequence is a break out of the diamond crystals due to a reduced anchorage in the cutting material matrix. The consequence of this is that by the machining of aluminum – and magnesium alloys and also non ferrous materials preferably diamond is used as cutting material. The clean diamond segments, which in most cases are brazed onto a carbide insert. The tool life can be increased with CVD thickfilm diamond approx 3 to 10 times vs. PCD.

                                Another new, very successful product is our blade head system with ultra-hard cutting materials such as PCD-CVD thick film diamond and PCBN.

                                You will be able to address a wide range of applications thanks to the cassette-equipped blade head system from DTS. From hard machining (up to 72HRC), to gray cast iron, up to non-ferrous metals and plastics (e.g. GRP, CFRP, etc.), there is the option of using ISO or special turning cutter plates in the blade head system, depending on the necessary application.
